We are developing a curriculum which includes important skills for working with computers -- skills that will make the students in demand for jobs in banks, phone companies, and other companies that provide stable employment in Haiti. It also includes modules that help students learn to be assertive, to communicate well, and to stay healthy. These lessons are drawn from It's All One Curriculum, a guideline for educational programs that develop students' understanding of gender, HIV, and human rights. It's All One guides students through concrete exercises to understand and practice setting goals and making concrete plans for their future.
We're now in the process of developing modules which will all be taught in Haitian Creole (except for language classess which will be taught in French). While the following subjects may seem very diverse, using a computer will open up a wide range of topics for study and a wealth of resources that simply are not easily available offline in Jeremie.
- Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office
- Proficiency in a second language (English or Spanish)
- The ability to express themselves in writing
- Setting goals and developing a plan for their education and career
- The ability to execute a research project on a topic of interest to them and present their findings.
- Greater understanding of how the HIV virus affects their bodies, how antiretroviral medication works, and how to prevent and treat other common illnesses (malaria, tuberculosis)
