Michelle Skaer Therrien, MPH, first traveled to Haiti in 2006 and moved to Haiti in June 2011 to work in the Haitian hospitals for the Caris Foundation International. She was stationed in Jeremie with responsibility for pediatric HIV testing and treatment throughout the Grand Anse and Sud departments. She was with Caris when she met the group of adolescents we are now inviting to participate in our program as part of our first cohort. Michelle is fluent in Haitian Creole. She is a project director for the Safe Motherhood Program of the University of California San Francisco. (If you are curious to learn more about Jeremie, Haiti, you can read Michelle's blog here.)
Jean-Philippe Therrien is a certified EMT who received his first lifesaving award within a year of starting service in New York due to his dedication and determination to provide outstanding service to the patients he serves. A native French speaker, JP is a co-founder and will be helping to launch classes for the students in Haiti. Jean-Philippe is also the founder of his own woodworking company, Creation Therrien. Creation Therrien is helping us to fund-raise through a portion (90%) of proceeds from their sales of cutting boards, which are available at his store in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn, at 152 9th Street.
Nell Timreck, MSN, CNM is a certified nurse midwife who trained at Yale Midwifery and is currently working in a large public health hospital in NYC. She has experience in international and domestic sexuality education development and reproductive justice work. In 2012 Nell traveled to Jeremie, Haiti to conduct an evaluation in maternal-child health and had the opportunity to meet individuals now involved in the Uplift Health program.
